By Gaussian elimination any LSE can be brought to row-echelon form:

In detail the $\ell$ -th elimination step proceeds as follows:

Select as pivot $p_\ell$ an element $\ne 0$ with smallest possible column-index $j_\ell$ and row-index $\ge \ell$ . Interchange the $\ell$ -th equation with the equation which contains the pivot.
If there is no possible pivot, the echelon form is reached.
For $i>\ell$ an appropriate multiple of the $\ell$ -th equation is subtracted from the -th equation so that $a_{i,j_\ell}$ equals zero.
