Tangent and Cotangent

The tangent and cotangent function are defined by

$\displaystyle \tan t =\frac{\sin t}{\cos t},\quad \cot t=\frac{\cos t}{\sin t} $

respectively. Relative to the algebraic sign they refer to the ratio of the legs of a right triangle.
